Newsletter Summer 24

Yes, we are in June already and summer is yet to truly arrive, but so far members have enjoyed a long weekend in Dovedale and the Llyn Peninsula, the latter including a trip over to Bardsey Island. The weather may have been mixed but we certainly enjoyed ourselves in true OHWC style.

Charity Walks & Picnic Sunday June 30th
This event will take the same format as the last two years. Both Green and Blue walks will be on offer, and then we will head over to Margaret and Denis’s for our picnic. Details of the walks will be sent out in the usual way. The club will provide hot sausages (including vegetarian) and a refreshing glass of Pimm’s or a cool beer if preferred. Please bring a savoury or sweet dish, which ever you would prefer. If you could let Paula know in advance it would be appreciated just so we can ensure we have a good balance of food. The charities we will be donating to will remain the same as last year i.e. The NE Wales Mountain Rescue and Cheshire Wildlife Trust. £5 or £10 would be much appreciated and payment can be made as usual into the OHWC Account.

Sandstone Trail in a day…… Monday 15th July 2024: Ian
What started as a hare-brained idea of Paula and I has now started to take shape. The challenge is to walk (the older 32-mile version of) the Sandstone Trail, starting at Beacon Hill car park and finishing at The Horse and Jockey pub at Grindley Brook. So far, the people who have intimated that they would like to rise to the challenge are Chris, Pauline, Paula, Sarah H, Ian, Jan, Linda D, Nev, plus Kate and Dave (for some of it) We will need to set off no later than 6.30am and keep up a ‘red walk’ pace all day, in order to beat the 8.30pm last food servings at the pub. We have deliberately avoided a weekend to reduce delays and Monday 15th July is the date that most people can make. To travel as light as we can, and to speed up any breaks, we would really appreciate some support along the way i.e. people in cars who can meet us at prearranged points and dish out drinks, food, energy bars, plasters (!) plus any necessary changes of clothes etc.

A planning meeting for walkers and supporters will be arranged closer to the date, when we may also have an idea of what weather we can expect.

If you’d like to be a walker or supporter then please let Paula know asap.

The Welsh Marilyns 6-8th September 20204: Abergavenny: John T
Abergavenny is a popular market town listed as 1st in the Times “Best places to live in Wales” guide and is now considered one of Wales’ best food and drink hubs. There has been a market here since the 13th Century and food remains a strong point, with The Abergavenny Food Festival celebrating its 25th anniversary last year. Those booked so far are staying in Abergavenny, which is just outside the Brecon Beacons National Park, but our 3 walks (Green, Red & Blue+) are within the Park.

Please contact Paula for more information if interested.

Club roles. Expressions of interest invited.
Three of the Committee members have roles which reach the end of their 4-year tenure after the AGM in February 2025. These are;
Ian as Chair
Jan as Walk Co-ordinator and
Caroline as Events Secretary (Holidays and Weekends).

Please visit the website to see a full description of the Committee roles. If you are interested then rest assured that a full hand over, plus ongoing support will be willingly provided. Jan has ensured that she will leave everything in great order, with updated policies and procedures, admin systems, and trained up walk leaders. Over the last 4 years, Caroline has done a fabulous job in scoping out holiday destinations, organising weekends away and keeping everyone ‘in the loop’. A list of all holiday provider contacts etc. will be available to ensure a smooth transition.

The Committee have talked about how members’ requirements for holidays and breaks appear to be changing. There is now an opportunity to canvas peoples’ views on what they would like going forward, where they would like to visit, what format they would like etc. This is a great opportunity for a new Holiday Secretary to help shape what the club can provide in the future.

If you are interested in any of the Committee roles, then please contact Ian.

Christmas Party 2024
We are still awaiting various venues to finalise their menus and prices, but Friday 6th December is the date we are provisionally setting. More details will follow as soon as I know.

Really looking forward to seeing you all at our Summer Charity Event.
