Where has the year gone? It’s August already…and what a mixed summer, weather-wise, it’s turned out to be. Perhaps we’ll have an Indian Summer?
Here’s your summer update of OHWC’s happenings, recent and future:
June 2019 Schenna and Merano Holiday
Members enjoyed the summer walking holiday in Schenna in the Italian autonomous province of Sud Tirol/Alto Adige, with HF. The Alpine scenery was spectacular, with a range of beautiful walks, provided in part by an excellent local guide. The hotel was outstanding, with members availing themselves of all its facilities (especially the pool, essential given the warm weather). The food was of gourmet standard. By common consent, the hotel was the best ever experienced by the Club in European walking holidays. The area was a revelation to walkers, for whom, in most cases, this was their first time in Sud Tirol.
July 2019 Charity Walks and BBQ
The weather forecast didn’t look too good, we kept our fingers crossed and, hurray, it was cloudy but it didn’t rain! 30 members enjoyed 2 walks, led by Jan and Dave (many thanks) and they were joined by a number of non-walkers and friends for a fantastically organised BBQ at Dennis and Margaret’s in Oscroft. Many, many thanks to them for hosting this event so brilliantly and many thanks, also, to everyone who brought salads and desserts. What a spread! Good food and good company – a lovely afternoon enjoyed by all.
As a result of your contributions, we will be donating approximately £260 (final figure to be confirmed) to our nominated charities, Cancer Research UK and Stroke Association – thank you, everyone.
A total of 23 people enjoyed the summer evening walks this year and it was great to see some members who are generally unable to make Sunday walks. We weren’t blessed with quite such good weather as last year but they were still enjoyable walks.
Sunday walk numbers dropped in the April to June period partly due to the cancellation of two green walks and the fact that so many of us go away at this time of year. However, it was great to see so many back walking on the two charity walks. Looking forward, we hope to see many of you on Sunday walks in the months ahead. Check out the walk programme for dates of different level walks.
Walk Leader Training
2019 has seen one of the most successful periods of walk leader training in the club’s history! Congratulations to Carine De-Bree-Clerks and Di Carr who have passed the bronze NNAS assessment (Green walk leading) and also to Neville Carr and Jan Gidman who passed the silver assessment (Blue walk leading). Both assessments were in the challenging terrain of Snowdonia. We look forward to their Green and Blue walks in the months ahead. Pauline Ziman and Steve Andrews passed the Gold NNAS assessment back in April and are now at the point of completing all their training walk leads to become full Red walk leaders from this summer.
Two of this year’s Wainright weekends have already taken place and we were once again fortunate with the weather. The remaining 2019 weekend is 11-13 September based in Keswick.
Dates for the Wainrights in 2020 are:
- 8-10 May – Braithwaite (or Keswick). As the early May bank holiday has been switched to Friday 8th May, accommodation will be very difficult to find so anyone intending to go should get their accommodation booked.
- 3-5 July – Pooley Bridge
- 11-13 September – Borrowdale. John Trimble is coordinating accommodation at Glaramara for this weekend. If you wish to take up this option, please contact John asap as the booking is in progress
All 2020 Wainwrights weekends are 3 days of walking (Friday-Sunday) and please let John Trimble know when you book so that you can be included in future communications.
