Newsletter Autumn 2018

Dear members

We hope you have all enjoyed a great summer and managed to get out and do plenty of walking; we certainly have had some wonderful walks with the club.

Charity Walk & Summer BBQ Sunday July 15th

For the second year the charity walk was local and we returned to Steve & Jan’s for the BBQ. Nearly 40 members attended, the weather was beautifully warm, the walks interesting and the array of food fantastic; so a big thankyou to all those who donated salads, brought garden furniture, provided BBQ equipment etc. It was a lovely occasion to catch up with other members and we raised an impressive £255.00 that was sent to Cancer Research UK and The Stroke Association.

Walk Information

Summer evening walks

The evening walks that were trialled this summer benefited from the superb weather and attracted a sufficient number of walkers to merit doing again.  The walk leaders have agreed that next year, dogs will be allowed on these evening walks at the discretion of the walk leader (on the same basis as for Green walks).

Dog owners are reminded that dogs should be kept under control in line with the dog walking code detailed below.

Any dog that is not appropriately controlled and/or causes problems, out of respect to other walkers will naturally not be permitted on subsequent walks.

Safety on walks

Some of you may have noticed that the safety section on the walk brief has been expanded to include instructions for what to do if you become detached from the main group.

If you become detached from the group STOP, call out; and try contacting the group by phone or text. If no contact is made return to the last place you were with the group. Wait 30 mins repeatedly trying to make contact. After 30 mins seek help and/or make your own way safely.

You are advised to make sure that you have the walk leader’s mobile phone number (given on the walk brief) with you in case of an emergency.  Please don’t rely on having sufficient data to pull up the walk brief in your email when out on the hills or on the way to the car park. We suggest you print it as a paper copy or put the leader’s phone number into your contacts. In the event of poor signal, remember that texts are smaller pockets of information that will often get through when a phone call does not.

Emergency life support training

Anyone who would like emergency life support training can do this via Tattenhall First Responders.  There is no charge but they welcome donations. Please contact them directly if you are interested.

Walking Holidays 2018

Summer Holiday: Lake Bled, Slovenia Saturday 23rd to June Saturday 30th June 2018

23 members had booked for our 2018 summer holiday. All who went commented upon how beautiful the surrounding area was and how much they enjoyed the trip.

Autumn Walking Weekend: Keswick, Lake District. 21st to 24th September 2018

Our stay at Glaramara hotel was every bit as good as last time. We were very lucky with the weather as although heavy rain had been forecast little appeared and on each day we had excellent views and the sun shone for at least part of the time making it pleasantly warm. The food was of a very high standard again and as usual we enjoyed many laughs together.

Walking Holidays 2019

For our two weekends away next year the committee has deliberately chosen one location relatively near to home and one further afield; details are below.

Spring 2019

In the spring we are going to Nether Grange in Alnmouth, Northumberland. The dates are 26th to 29th April and the cost per person is £265 approximately (depends on numbers) for our usual package of full board. We have 36 people already booked on the holiday, but the hotel can take more and there may be availability so please email Sarah or the Secretary Events email address if interested.

Summer 2019

We are heading to Schenna in Sud Tirol, Italy on 22nd June 2019 for 7 nights. The cost of the holiday is £1,649 flying from Manchester. If you make your own way to the resort the cost is £1,299 per person. So far we have 16 people booked and there will be space available. The issue with the European holiday is always the space on flights and these are not booked yet so we should have availability. The resort looks fabulous and the area is very beautiful so don’t miss out. Again contact Sarah as above.

Autumn 2019.

In the autumn we are going to Dolserau Hall in Dolgellau, Southern Snowdonia. The dates are 4th to 7th October and the cost is approximately £255 per person. We have 17 people booked on this holiday and there is space available. If you have not booked and you would like to come please contact Sarah.

Walk Photos

As you can see from the photos below some members take some fantastic pictures while out on walks. They are great reminders of where we have been, the members who went and the fabulous and sometimes hilarious things we have seen or done. If you have taken photos please send them to James to up-load onto our website for us all to share.

Future Events / Dates for the diary

New Year Party. Willington Hall Saturday January 12th 2019 7.30pm

As we are all so busy in the weeks leading up to Christmas the committee thought it might be a welcome change for us to get together for a meal in the New Year. It might just help us face the post-Christmas blues and the rather dreary January weather.  We are also aware that although most enjoyed the meal at Willington Hall a few were disappointed. The staff did seem to be rather stretched and the place very busy; therefore this too has influenced our decision. In January everywhere should be much quieter.

The provisional date for this is Friday 8th February 2019.

On behalf of the committee best wishes to you all
