This is a circular walk including the Roaches, Hen Cloud and Lud’s church in the Southern Peak District. The Roaches are spectacular rock formations, with gritstone boulders and on a clear day we should have stunning views across Cheshire, Staffordshire and Derbyshire. We also visit the ancient site of Lud’s Church. This is a deep chasm through the millstone grit and covered in algae, mosses and ferns.

Do not walk if you are feeling unwell. Carry your own hand sanitiser. In case of an emergency ensure you have with you a face mask and first aid pack.
Inevitably, the route will go through gates and over stiles that other people will have touched. It may have narrow sections that mean you will be passing close to other people.
Leaving the carpark, we follow the River Dane then walk through Forest Wood climbing steadily to our high point of the day, The Roaches (505m). We follow the Roaches ridge then descend gently to Hen Cloud (410m) at the southern end of the gritstone escarpment. We carry on descending to towards the village of Meerbrook before starting to climb gently again, through Back Forest, to reach the ridge leading to Lud’s Church (345m).
We continue descending through the 100m long,18m deep chasm, back through Forest Wood then walk along the River Dane retracing our way back to our start at the car park.
