Woodland, river and the summit of Moel Famau combine to give a walk through varied and pleasant scenery with good views provided the weather obliges. Not difficult and relatively close to home, this route fits well within the short days of mid-December.

Starting from Loggerheads Country Park, there is a 1km section on a minor road as we head in a westerly direction towards the Clwydian range. Road morphs into path alongside a stream before a short ascent on a good path joins the network of forest roads that bestride the eastern spurs of Moel Famau. The forest road offers easy walking before it too becomes a path amidst some lovely woodland with height being gained gradually and easily. Upon meeting the main path from the lower Moel Famau carpark, the gradient steepens for the second half of the ascent. A newly constructed path (labelled “easy with nicer views”) offers a pleasant zigzag alternative to the worst ravages of erosion on the main path and the summit is soon gained.
On leaving the summit, we follow Offa’s Dyke in a WNW direction to lose the initial steep bit of height. Whilst this is a little out of our way, it is a better-constructed path than the scrappy, eroded but more direct alternative. Circling below the summit mound, we descend a pleasant, easy path around the north side of Ffrith mountain to rejoin lanes for 1km. A track heads down to ford the main river where a foot bridge is thoughtfully provided alongside. A short ascent beings us to the main Leete path which we follow for the remaining 1.5km back to the car park. The café claims to be open until 5pm so we should be in time for a post walk cuppa and cake.
