- Annual Report
Howard Cruse reported briefly on the last year. It has been a steady year with the walking holidays going well (Dolomites, Dove Dale, Picos de Europa and Glaramara). All holidays were really enjoyed not only for the weather (yet again we were lucky) but also for the excellent walking. The Wainrights have also been going well with a number of peaks being accomplished. The holidays for 2017 are going well with a couple already fully booked namely the late September break down in Dorset.
For 2018 it has been decided to keep things simple and not offer so many options.
The club’s social events were held at new venues, were well supported and enjoyed.
We had one Health and Safety issue when a member fell while abroad in the Dolomites. The person in question has made a good recovery but Howard reminded members that everyone should be taking out their own holiday insurance as the club is covered for weekend walks only and not for other events i.e. Winter holidays.
Walk numbers have been better this year.
- Financial Report
By Ken Pratt
(Information attached Appendix 1).
Ken talked everyone through the last year’s income and expenditure stating that the club remains in a good, quite robust position. The income generated was boosted by money generated on the charity walk which was very well attended. For the Weekend in Glaramara the club had paid out additional money for walk leaders as many of our own walk leaders wished to cover some of the Wainwrights that weekend and so were unable to lead walks themselves. At this point Howard added that combining a club weekend away with the Wainwrights had proved not altogether successful and so the two would be kept separate in the future.
The committee felt that the walk fees were adequate and therefore would remain the same for 2017. I.e.
£2 for weekend walks
£2 for Wainwrights
£5 for weekend away
£5 for Charity Walk
This was put to a vote.
Proposed: Hugh Bray
Seconded: Pauline Ziman
All members were in favour.
Vote: approved
Toots Williamson commented that income provided by new membership was low and asked if increasing the membership could be set as a target for 2017.
- Review of Walk Programme 2016
By Steve Andrews.
Walk Statistics were presented (attached Appendix 2).
Steve reported that more members walked in 2016, the average number per walk had increased and that compared with 2015 less walks had been cancelled.
Charity Walk: Steve thanked everyone involved (Jan Gidman for leading, Howard and Mary for hosting and the committee for organising the food)
Valerie and Brian were also thanked for hosting and providing drinks and mince pies at our Christmas/ New Year walk.
Walking Holidays:
Picos: This was an excellent holiday, the scenery fabulous and no walk (easy or harder) was easy. Everyone was challenged and everyone took pleasure from their achievements.
Glaramara
Steve elaborated on the issue already referred to by Howard and explained that as the majority of Walk Leaders who attended the weekend were wishing to complete the Wainwright walks we were short of club leaders. This meant that the club paid out for 2 walk Leaders per day. Although Steve had provided the centre with our requirements beforehand members commented that the leaders brought in were not well informed and this led to a lack of clear walk proposals from them. Members were offered so many variances on distance, difficulty and route that many felt unsure whether it would be appropriate for them. Many members on Sunday decided to go their own way. It should however be mentioned that those who attended these walks nonetheless thoroughly enjoyed themselves.
Walks for 2017
This year walk leaders have already volunteered their services meaning that all walks up until October have been allocated. Some walk leaders have also already provided details of where they will be.
Wainwrights
Walks in 2016 have on some occasions been very long and hard days. John Trimble has now planned how and when the remaining summits will be reached and this will take until 2021 to complete. Please note: A walk list has been circulated to all those who have taken part to date. If additional members are interested, please contact Howard or John for more information. Booking accommodation is up to the individual, although they do recommend hotels/ B&B’s.
Steve welcomed Caroline and Pauline as newly trained Walk leaders. If anyone in the club is interested in becoming a walk leader then please contact Steve will organise the necessary training. Pauline and Steve are hoping to complete their Gold in the Autumn.
Steve announced that this would be his last report as he was standing down having completed 4 years. He thanked all the walk leaders for their support over the last 4 years and the club for their patience and understanding when things have not quite gone to plan.

By Paula Ford
- Summer Social Evening at The Cornichon in Tarvin on Thursday 25th August.
23 members attended our Summer Party at the Cornichon in Tarvin. The food proved to be excellent value for money (only £15.00 for 3 courses) and we enjoyed a very relaxed evening, with of course excellent company.
- Christmas Party: Friday 2nd December at Willington Hall.
This was held in the Orangery (a new room which overlooks the gardens and surrounding countryside). It proved to be a delightful evening with excellent food and company.
- Election of Committee Officers
Howard Cruse presented the nominations for the following year.
Sarah Andrew (Holidays and Events Secretary)
Pauline Ziman (Walk Leader Officer)
Ed Smyth (Chair)
Paula Ford (Members and Holidays Secretary)
Ken Pratt (Treasurer)
Motion Approved.
- Election of Auditor
Howard thanked Pauline Ziman for the work she has carried out, but as she was now to be a committee member she would not be able to complete the audit in the future.
Members there were asked if they could perhaps take the job on and Mark Manton Volunteered
- OHWC Website
James has received a number of comments regarding logging onto the OHWC website especially into the Member’s secure area. James proposed removing the restrictions and having everything accessible in the public area. The site is now very comprehensive, contains lots of useful information on future events, walks and holidays. It also has a large photo gallery of walks attended which is much appreciated.
- Membership Card
The membership card detailing all walks and contact numbers was introduced for 2016. The committee’s contact details, along with club events were also included on the card and it has generally been proved useful.
A.O.B
Toots Williamson thanked the committee for the wonderful holiday in Picos de Europa, saying the walk leaders there were superb.
Howard thanked the committee for all the work they had done and also Pauline, James Williamson and John Trimble. He also thanked all at Eaton Golf Club including Carol, Ross and her catering team.
